Obit — William Simon Oliver

William Simon “Bill” Oliver, age 70, of Van Horn, passed from this life on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Alpine, Texas on May 26, 1943 to the late Russell and Bertha Jo (Glasscock) Oliver.

Bill's parents ran the rock shop in Van Horn and he later took over its operation. He was an avid rock hunter. He could not sit still for very long and loved to walk and enjoy the great outdoors. He was always on the go and had a passion for life. He was also a good carpenter. It was very difficult for him when cancer limited his ability to communicate and he began to stay at home. Bill was a strong Christian man who reminded his son often, “Boy, better keep your eyes looking up.” He did not like the government, but trusted the Lord.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons: William Oliver and wife Deja of San Antonio and Russell James Oliver of Van Horn; daughter: Deena Vlach and husband Larry of Columbus, Texas; brother: Joe Oliver of Odessa; sister: Sue Flinn and husband Ray of Sonora; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services to honor his memory will be 11 a.m. Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Van Horn Community Church, in Van Horn, officiated by Pastor Rodney Tilley. He will be laid to rest with his parents at Sonora Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory of Odessa. Condolences may be sent the family online at acreswestfuneral.com.
