Marfa Public Radio wins 8 prestigious Murrow Awards

Marfa Public Radio has been awarded eight Regional [Edward R.] Murrow Awards for 2015.

The Marfa Public Radio network — with radio stations KRTS in the Big Bend region and KXWT in the Permian Basin — is the most-awarded radio outlet in the nation this year.

 The Edward R. Murrow Awards are like the “Oscars” of the broadcast business. The Murrow Awards take into account all radio and television stations – commercial and noncommercial. 

There are 13 national regions, and 1 international category. Marfa Public Radio was judged in Region 6 among other small-market stations. There were more than 4,200 submissions – an all-time record for the Murrow Awards.

 With these Regional Murrow Awards, Marfa Public Radio advances into national consideration, the results of which will be announced in June. 

 The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. It’s named after Edward R. Murrow, a pioneer of broadcast news on CBS radio and television, during World War II and beyond. Murrow’s pursuit of excellence in journalism embodies the spirit of the awards that carry his name.

 “When newsrooms do outstanding work to inform their audience and serve their community, it should be celebrated,” said RTDNA Chair Amy Tardif. “Being recognized with one of journalism’s most prestigious awards is one way to showcase their commitment to excellence.”
