You all have heard the saying about having, “too much of a good thing,†and I think it is probably true for most of the time. For example, we have been hearing about the areas in Texas under drought conditions and people were crying out for their need for rain, well…..not today.
It seems records were broken all over the state for rain and flood levels. In fact, the news reported that this past weekend, the river Blanco’s water level raised over 30 feet in just one hour. That my friend is, “too much of a good thing†Water, that needed commodity, had now become a detriment of excess to all that were living.
You see, too much snow, too much ice, too much heat, too much cold, too much excess in anything is never a good thing. We hear of those with eating disorders who can devour Big Macs by the pound and how about those who lay on the beach for hours for that summer tan who are now fighting skin cancer and other melanomas. It was too much of a good thing.
It was that drink after supper, and after work, and then after lunch, and finally you are sneaking drinks from your desk drawer just to make it through the day. That is addiction and it is too much of a good thing.
Too much of a good thing leads the thrifty to become a miser, the concerned to become an enabler, and the just to become judgmental; all because they had too much of a good thing. In fact, and please don’t tell my congregation, you can have too much religion.
It was like an aunt of mine who went to church every night of the week and on some mornings too. There was prayer breakfasts and ladies tea, along with the feeding of the needy, and Bible studies, and not to mention Sundays services. But she would not go fishing with her husband or take her kids to the park. She had too much religion, but not enough of Jesus.
You see there is only one thing that you cannot get too much of and that is of Jesus and his Holy Spirit. This past Sunday was Pentecost Sunday as recorded in Acts and on that day we celebrate the beginning of the church and the infilling of the Holy Spirit for on that day they too had, “too much of a good thing,†or so it seemed. Peter, who once denied the Lord, was now preaching on the street, while the other apostles were all telling of the glories of God in various languages to those that stood nearby.
About 3,000 people joined the church in just one day and that excess joy, that excess love, and that Spirit of forgiveness has been multiplying every day since. You can never have too much of Jesus, in fact, most of us don’t have enough of Jesus to tell those around us. Friend, let God’s abundance fill you to overflowing so that it pours out of your life and to all those who you come into contact. Jesus is never, “too much of a good thing.â€
