First in powerlifting

By Lonnie Flippen

Elvis Tarango, a junior at Valentine ISD, participated in his first powerlifting competition this last Saturday, January 30 at Crane, Texas. Tarango is the first athlete to have ever been involved in powerlifting from Valentine. He finished 2nd in his division against fifteen other athletes from Ozona, Crane, Pecos, Big Lake, Iraan, Sonora, and McCamey. Class A schools – 6 Man size schools – compete in Division III in powerlifting which includes schools in Class A, 2A, and 3A.

Tarango finished behind a lifter from Ozona who lifted 5 pounds more than Tarango. Tarango competed in the 148 pound division and had lifts of 365 pounds in the squat, 220 in the bench press, and 405 pounds in the dead lift. His total weight of 990 pounds has him in the top ten lifters in his division and the top twelve lifters qualify for regional competition in early March in Sundown, Texas.

Tarango is scheduled to lift in two more meets in the coming weeks. He will compete in Alpine and then Pecos as he attempts to improve his total weight and assure himself a place at the regional competition.

Tarango is also expected to be very competitive in track this spring as he won the district in both the 100 and 200 meters last year as a sophomore.
