Dear Tia,

I work with the public and am amazed at how many people have altered senses of smell!  I presume that that is the reason that they don’t realize how bad they smell.  I swear, some people don’t get that they are not saving the planet by conserving water when they don’t bathe or wash their clothes regularly.  Some have clothes that could walk to the washer by themselves and have parts of their last 10 meals on their shirts.  Is there a nice way to let them know that maybe they should consider bathing and washing their clothes a little more often than once a month?

The Nose Knows

Dear Nose,

As astonishing as it may seem, personal hygiene is not a priority with many people.  Some may have been around the odor for so long that they have developed immunity to the smell.  Yet others believe that regular bathing is bad for their health, especially in the winter.  Some even think that body odor is sexy and attractive to the opposite sex…probably who also doesn’t bathe.  If the reason that the person smells is because they do not have access to running water, that is one thing, but if that is not the case, it is perfectly acceptable to openly place large amounts of Vicks in your nostrils before dealing with them.
