Continued financial gains for Town of Van Horn

By Edna Clark

The Town of Van Horn City Council met on Tuesday, November 29, with Mayor Pro Tem Pam Young presiding.  All aldermen were in attendance to hear more good financial news from City Secretary Fran Malafronte.

Ms. Malafronte told Council that currently there is over $700,000 in interest bearing reserve accounts while the general operating fund remains over $2,000,000.  After monthly bills amounting to $103,000 were paid, an additional $80,000 was added to the general operating fund.

More than $141,000 in City taxes has been collected and added to the coffers.  Accolades were extended to Ms. Malafronte and the City Hall employees for responsible financial management that has allowed the City to be in such good financial condition.

Alderman Rudy Hinojos asked Ms. Malafronte to have the street department make road repairs to Sowell Street, south of Interstate 10 East.

Council approved the 2017 City Holiday Calendar with no changes being made from the 2016 calendar.

More good news was received by Council in the form of the number of registered Trans Pecos Big Buck Tournament entries.  As of 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, there were 70 entries in the buck competition.  The 4-H raffle had generated $350 so far.  Everyone is invited to come by the Convention Center to purchase a raffle ticket to support the 4-H Club.

City Council meetings for December will be at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesdays December 13 and December 27.
