Dear Tia,

I have been divorced from my husband for more than 20 years.  I finally made the decision to leave him after the last time he beat me and I had had enough.  It was the best decision I ever made.  Recently, I became ill and had a short stay in the hospital, nothing serious, and guess who appeared?  My ex-husband!  He was the sweetest, kindest, most considerate man…not like the one I divorced.  The whole time I was there, he visited, brought me food, and comforted me.  Then he started in on me, trying to talk me into going back to him and reassuring me that it would be so different this time.  What do you think?

Second Chance

Dear Second Chance,

Don’t be an idiot!  Haven’t you ever heard the saying, “a tiger doesn’t change his stripes?”  The same thing applies to wife beaters…once a wife beater, always a wife beater!  He saw you as extra vulnerable when you were sick, and a perfect time and situation to talk you into letting him back into your life.  Don’t do it.  If you have adjusted to being without him, and are happy without him, why would you let him back in to repeat history?  Send him on his merry way and next time you are sick, tell the nurses not to allow him in to see you.  Congratulations on being strong enough to get away from him before it was too late!
