Tarango and Sanchez continue to improve

By Coach Lonnie Flippen, VISD

Elvis Tarango ran and Francis Sanchez threw with a great deal of success at the Alpine Bucks Relays on Saturday, March 25 in Alpine, Texas. Now that Tarango is no longer focused on powerlifting he can concentrate on track and hopefully making his way back to Austin and the State Track Meet in May. Tarango finished in third place in the 100 meters with a time of 11.35. A Presidio runner and an Alpine runner finished in front of Tarango. He came back a short time later in the 200 meters and ran a 23.46, once again behind the Presidio sprinter. Tarango was able to finish in front of runners from Balmorhea and Marfa, both district opponents, who had bested him earlier in the year.

Francis Sanchez, a sophomore, finished 3rd in the JV division in the discus with a throw of 73 feet. She then came back and won the JV shot put competition with a throw of 26 feet 1 1/2 inches. Only one district opponent had a better throw in the discus. Sanchez still has two weeks to improve on her throws and give herself a chance to advance to San Angelo and the regional competition in late April. She and Tarango will both be competing in the District 9A Track Meet in Van Horn in a couple of weeks.
