Lady Pirates logging some miles

By Coach Lonnie Flippen, VISD

The Lady Pirates, all five of them, ran into a buzz saw last Tuesday when the Lady Longhorn 7th grade volleyball team came calling in Valentine. The Lady Longhorns defeated the Lady Pirates, 25-13, 25-11, and 25-9 in three straight games. The Lady Longhorn servers seemed to find where the Pirate’s “invisible” player was located on a regular basis. The Buena Vista coach indicated that his seventh grade team often gave his eighth graders all they could handle in practice on any given day. The Lady Longhorns are a very impressive bunch of young ladies.

The Lady Pirates made the long road trip, about 168 miles one-way, to take on the Lady Badgers from McCamey on Tuesday, September 19.  Yes, McCamey is a 2-A school in a 1-A district. The short-handed Pirates came up against the eighteen Lady Badgers and fell in the first game 25-16.

The Pirates came roaring back in the second game behind the serving of Mickie Siddiq. The Pirates were down 19-12 when Siddiq served 11 straight points to give the Pirates the lead. They held on to win the second game 25-21.

The Badgers went on to win the third game 25-11. The other Pirates who played well and continue to improve each week are Bela Oldham, Jordan Miller, Isabel Guillory, and sixth grader, Claudia Figueroa.

The Pirates are at home next Tuesday, September, 26 at 5:00 p.m. against Balmorhea.
