Lady Pirate basketball update

After scrimmaging the Dell City girls last Friday and having a great deal of success, the Lady Pirates travelled to Presidio on Tuesday, November 7 and played the Lady Blue Devils 3A Freshmen girls. The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 19 to 2 halftime lead and held on to win by a score of 27 to 15. The Pirates were fatigued toward the end of the game and were outscored 13 to 8 in the second half.

Freshman, Jaymie Sanchez led all scorers with her 11 points including a perfect 5 for 5 from the free throw line. Senior, Jessie Garcia added six points and Evan Means scored eight points with Junior, Francis Sanchez scoring two. Junior, Lizy Rey and freshman, Samantha Kuhlman played well on defense making several steals and pulling down numerous rebounds.

In the scrimmage with Dell City, the Pirates outscored the Lady Cougars 21 to 4 in the two quarters of live play and held the Cougars scoreless in their 10-minute offensive possession while scoring 12 points t hemselves in their 10-minutes on offense.

The Lady Pirates will play host to teams from Presidio and Van Horn on Saturday, November 11 at the annual Valentine Tournament. Marfa was scheduled to send over boys and girls teams as well but may have to withdraw as the Marfa Shorthorn volleyball team has continued to advance in the state playoffs. The Marathon Mustangs will send a boy’s team to the tournament for the first time in several years.
