The top 2 places will advance to the STATE championships in Austin, TX on May 11-13.

The Eagles entered 5 boys events and 7 girls events to the Class AA Region I championships in Odessa, Texas.  By the end of the weekend, the Eagles had placed 1st in the girls’ long jump, 5th in the girls’ shot put and 5th in the boys’ 800m.

At 9a.m on Friday, Renee Rivera was the first to compete in the long jump.  She was the defending regional champion in this event.  In her 1st jump, she exploded with a 17’-5’’ jump that took the lead right off the bat.  It was a lead that would not be relinquished.  With the victory already in hand, she chose to take her 6th and final jump.  She unloaded a 17’-11 ¾’’ leap that broke her own school record and advanced her to the state championships in Austin.  Skyler Brooks from Miles finished second with a jump of 16’-8’’.  That afternoon, Renee was able to qualify in the 100m clocking 12.82.  In her second event, the 200m, Renee had to pull up after 100m with a nagging hamstring injury. She was unable to compete in the finals.

On Saturday, competition started at 9a.m, as well.  This time it was Jadein Tarango’s turn to compete in the shot put.  She threw her first put 37’-5’’.  This put advanced her to the finals.  She was able to improve to 37’-9 ½’’ in the finals with one of her puts reaching the 38’ mark put she fouled.  She stayed in the 5th position with Bree Baker winning the event at 40’-11’’.  First thru third places went over the 40 foot barrier.

That afternoon, in the running events, Ryan Corralez took to the track in the 800m.  In his first regional competition, Ryan and 15 other runners pushed, spiked and fought for position in the first 200m.  After 400m, Ryan found himself in 7th position but still in striking position.  Down the backstretch, he was able to run down 2 runners and he finished in 5th place with a time of 2:09.54.  Steven Quintanilla from Sundown was 1st in a 2:01.77.

We would like to wish good luck to Renee Rivera at state.  This is Renee’s 4th year in a row and her 9th event participating at the state championships.
